I had a job at work today where I had to switch a DirecTV remote to IR mode to test if the box would see the remote from where I was standing. I found this website and it was pretty easy.

When switching the IR/RF mode of the receiver, it displays onscreen instructions for also switching the mode of the remote control. Those instructions are reproduced here.

To put the remote control into IR mode:
  • Press and hold MUTE & SELECT, wait for two blinks, release
  • Enter 9 6 1
  • Press CHAN down
To put the remote control into RF mode:
  • Press and hold MUTE & SELECT, wait for two blinks, release
  • Enter 9 6 1
  • Press CHAN up
  • Enter last 6 digits of the Receiver ID number, found on a sticker in the access card compartment
  • Press SELECT

But then I needed to put it back and the steps to switch back didn't work. I then found these steps but I had to tweak alittle and got it back.

If it's a genie remote(rc7x) then hold down the mute and enter NOT select but enter which is under the number nine,  until you get the on screen message that your remote is now setup for rf

Make sure the satellite box is on. Press the needed buttons. Once the remote starts blinking make sure the remote is near the satellite box. The TV will let you know it's connected.
